How To Improve The Service Life Of Zinc Kettles

Jan. 09, 2023

Zinc Kettle

The service life of a zinc kettle is the main indicator of its quality. Failure of a zinc kettle will bring high costs to a hot-dip galvanizing company, such as shutdown losses, zinc leakage consumption of 5%-8%, energy consumption for remelting, etc. In addition to its processing quality and thickness, the service life of a zinc kettle is also influenced by the level of operational management, which can be increased by taking the following measures.

Factors affecting the service life of the zinc kettle

1. Whether the material of the zinc kettle is properly selected.

2. Whether the zinc kettle is made and checked correctly

3. The construction of the trough and the way of burning, which is more beneficial to heat within.

4. Whether the temperature is properly controlled (constant temperature and avoiding 500℃ is better)

5. The size of the output.

6. The more zinc dross in the operation, the easier it is to absorb heat, making local hot spots increase.

7. The effect of adding aluminum or other alloying elements to the zinc bath.

Measures to increase the service life of the zinc kettle

1. When heating the molten zinc for the first time, use long and slow heating to make the temperature of the zinc kettle change.

2. When stopping the furnace for cooling, stop heating slowly to avoid too much stress causing the zinc kettle to break.

3. Hydrostatic pressure is greatest in the bottom part of the kettle, which is also a non-negligible factor for deeper zinc Kettles.

4. Use a constant temperature heating system with temperature measurement and control instruments (very important).

5. Strictly implement the determined heating process parameters: do not exceed the limiting critical temperature of 490°C. A high rate of iron corrosion occurs when the temperature of the inner wall of the zinc kettle reaches 490°C-530°C. Do not exceed the critical heating intensity of 24kW-h/m2.

6. The temperature difference between the wall and bottom of the zinc kettle should not exceed 100K, and the temperature difference between other different locations on the kettle wall should be controlled within 50K.

7. Too fast plating speed will cause large temperature fluctuations in the zinc bath, which will affect the service life of the zinc kettle.

8. Large temperature fluctuations in the zinc bath caused by plated parts can also be avoided by combining different batches of plated parts in a reasonable way, or by mixing heavy and light parts in one batch if the spreader and transfer conditions allow.
